Ms. Bultman earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, hailed by several independent publications as a top music school in the nation. She studied violin performance, pedagogy, chamber music, and composition, and graduated with highest honors. She held concertmaster positions in the Eastman Philharmonia and the Eastman School Symphony Orchestra, and studied with Peter Salaff, member of the Cleveland Quartet, one of the nation’s premiere quartets for many years. She served as teaching assistant for violin professor Catherine Tait, and string education professor Dr. Louis Bergonzi.
Ms. Bultman has played professionally since the age of 14, holding positions in orchestras in several New York cities and Heidelberg, Germany. She has participated in the National Orchestral Institute at the University of Maryland, and performed as violin soloist with the Binghamton Youth Symphony and the Roberts Wesleyan College Community Orchestra. She also played in a professional string quartet, giving formal concerts and school presentations to well over 15,000 school children in western Kentucky and upstate New York for 5 years.
As a performer, Ms. Bultman is comfortable with many styles, but specializes in classical, Celtic fiddle, sacred contemporary, and improvisational, as well as frequently performing her own compositions. She has taken masterclasses with fiddling giants Darol Anger, Mark O’Connor, Natalie McMaster, and Jeremy Kittle (Turtle Island Quartet). Beth and her husband Kyle have performed all over the country in recent years, and are known for their unusual ability to perform unique free improvisation duos, requested again and again by audience members.
As a college professor, Ms. Bultman has taught string methods, string pedagogy, chamber music, and violin lessons at Roberts Wesleyan College, Houghton College, and Binghamton University. She has run a private studio for students of all ages for over 15 years. Ms. Bultman and her husband, Kyle, were the first co-directors of the New Horizons Orchestra, begun for senior adult string players, and subsequently taught in the Eastman School of Music’s Community Education Division for several years.
Ms. Bultman has taught in various contexts for 20 years. Able to immediately diagnose and present solutions for technical problems, Ms. Bultman specializes in reducing tension in playing, bringing about the mind/body connection, and encouraging musical expression. She is comfortable teaching all levels (from beginner to conservatory), and specializes in teaching, coaching, and mentoring adult string players. Her patience and enthusiasm brings out the best in her students, and she loves presenting the opportunity for creativity and self-confidence to blossom.
Ms. Bultman has presented several sessions for teachers at state and national conferences, including the American String Teachers Association National Conference (2008 & 2009), MENC Eastern Division Conference (2009), New York State School Music Association Conference (2008), and the Ohio Music Educators National Conference (2009). Her article, “Unlocking Your Mind to Spark a Positive String Performance”, was published by Strings Magazine in July, 2010.
Ms. Bultman co-founded Scor!, offering inspiring string camps for adults. Serving as Program Director and String Faculty Member, she has organized over 10 years of Scor! events, and has traveled extensively, putting on 12 Scor! events in the last 3 years. Ms. Bultman has taught, coached, and presented dozens of sessions with Scor!.
Ms. Bultman has composed music for a community grant project, a college graduation, orchestra tours, weddings, funerals, and for performances with colleagues and her students. Her compositions are hailed by conductors and ensembles alike as one of the few pieces to be repeatedly performed by ensembles who don’t want to put them down after the concert. Ms. Bultman’s compositions are published by Synkros.
In an effort to help lead the industry in adult music education, he presented a session at both the 2008 & 2009 ASTA National Conferences entitled How to Start an Adult String Camp. Other teaching experience includes nine years of private instruction at Roberts Wesleyan College. He also directed and administered its Community Music School and founded its Chamber Orchestra, a touring ensemble.
As a member of the Genesis String Quartet, Mr. Bultman has brought educational presentations to well over 15,000 school children in western Kentucky and upstate New York. The ensemble gave several formal concert series, and participated in a residency in Madisonville, KY, a grant project in Rochester, NY, and served as artists affiliated with Young Audiences.
His education includes Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees (graduating with honors) in Violin Performance & Literature from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. While at Eastman, he studied marketing, grant-writing, entrepreneurship fundraising, and string pedagogy.
His unique abilities as a performer include his diversity of styles, flexibility, and amazing ability as an improviser to be “in the zone”. His ensembles appreciate him as kind & patient, bringing out the best in musical expression. He has premiered numerous new compositions with his ensembles, many at Scor! through the years. As a teacher, Mr. Bultman’s strengths lie in the technique department, and his ability to diagnose a myriad of problems on sight. He specializes in the bow arm, preparing next steps for any willing student.
