Search for Life Beyond the Solar System: Exoplanets, Biosignatures & Instruments

Tucson, Arizona
Sunday, March 16, 2014

The conference will be preceded by a three-day astrobiology school  featuring lectures from some of the keynote and invited speakers. The school aims to introduce graduate students and postdocs to the key principles and latest results of the key disciplines of the EBI2014 conference.

The EBI school is open to graduate students and post-docs whose research is similar to the themes of the conference. This requirement will be interpreted broadly to ensure a diversity of participants from multiple disciplines. To apply please 1) send a one page essay that explains clearly why you're interested in the school, how your research is complimentary to the goals of the school and conference, and a description of current and/or planned research; and 2) arrange for an advisor to send a letter of recommendation endorsing the applicant's participation in the school.
All application material must be  submitted by e-mail to by midnight Pacific Standard Time, December 1, 2013.

Application material should be submitted as a PDF. All inquiries regarding the school should be sent to the same e-mail address. The school will be free for participants of the EBI2014 conference.

The dean of the School is
Dr Rory Barnes (University of Washington).

The format of the school is a mix of lectures, hands-on activities, and group discussions. Each morning, two lecturers will describe the current big questions and state-of-the-art in a given topic. In the afternoon students will be divided into groups for hands-on activities that expand on the morning's lecture topics. In the evening, the students and faculty will reconvene for a group discussion on the results of the activities. A prelimiary list of topics and lecturers is below.

Friday - Planetary Habitability
Topics: Requirements for Habitability (Rory Barnes),
Planet Formation (Rory Barnes), and the early Earth environment (TBD)

Saturday - Life & Biosignatures
Topics: Prebiotic chemistry (Steve Benner, TBC) and Metabolisms  (John Baross)

Sunday - Detecting/Characterizing Habitable Planets
Topics: Transits (George Ricker) and Direct Detection (Olivier Guyon)

The school will take place at the University of Arizona’s unique Biosphere 2 facility, about 20 minutes drive from the EBI2014 conference hotel. Biosphere 2 hosts an exciting variety of indoor habitats, including a tropical rain forest and an ocean.Accommodation will be provided in comfortable casitas at the B2 site at no cost to the participants; the school will use the Biosphere 2 meeting rooms.
