Nancy Brookes, RN, MSc(A); PhD; CPMHN(C) wrote the first psychiatric and mental health certification exam in 1995; with MT designed and developed these exam prep sessions – which have evolved over time; participated in competency review for the previous revision seven years ago and the current exam which sees the addition of health promotion, well-being and recovery and professional roles competencies; and happy to add that she was successful in transforming the language to person first language for the new blueprint and the exam!Dr. Brookes is a McGill grad from the mid 80s – where she was socialized into a health promotion model – the McGill Model and she has been practising from, teaching and researching in a recovery model since 2002 when we introduced to the Tidal Model of Mental Health Recovery and Reclamation – wrote the chapter in the theories text – we are the hub of the Tidal in Canada, Tidal being a recovery model, person-centred, research based, collaborative strength-based and solution focused etc so now we’ll look at the health promotion, well-being and recovery competency.

Christine Caldwell has been practicing mental health nursing at the Royal Ottawa Hospital for 37 years. She was an RN in the Mood Disorders Inpatient Unit for 9 years and  in 1995 she moved to an outpatient setting, first with the Community Care Team and then with the Mood Disorders Program Outpatient Assessment Clinic. She is currently working as a Research Coordinator in IMHR Mood Disorders Program. She received her CNA certification in 1996.

Anne-Marie Clarkson, B.A., Psychology, BScN Anne-Marie Clarkson is an Advance Practice Nurse currently working on the Behavioural Neurosciences Consulation Liaison (BNCL) Team at CHEO. She has worked for ten years in the field of pediatric mental health, providing support to children with concurrent medical and mental health conditions, Tourette’s Disorder, and children with Dual Diagnosis.

Kim Colton RN, has focused her career on serving those with Major Mental Illness from the "front lines". A graduate of Algonquin College, she began her work at the ROHCG" as a temporary measure, until I could get a 'real' nursing job". Temporary soon became permanent; in the past 28 years she has worked in numerous areas throughout the organization, including Forensic, Psychiatric Emergency, Schizophrenia, ACT, and Psychiatric Outreach, encompassing in and outpatient areas, and the community.  She is currently involved in the pilot project of the new "Ambulatory Care Clinic" at the ROMHC and runs the “Consultation Clinic” which is part of the Patient Flow program.

Yvonne Craig BSc, BN, RN, CPMHN(C) has been a Nurse Clinician at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre (ROMHC) for the past eight years. Prior to this, she worked in a variety of clinical settings during her 18 years as a staff nurse here and in Halifax. She holds Bachelor degrees in Nursing and in Biology from Dalhousie University and has been certified in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing since 1996. A seasoned lecturer and workshop presenter, she has taught extensively in the areas of Therapeutic Relationships and Boundaries, Suicide Intervention and Crisis Intervention. In addition, the experience of Loss and Grief are areas of particular personal and professional interest.

Deborah Gerbasi, RN, CPMHC(C) in Geriatric psychiatry in pt RN 1986-2001, Geriatric Psychiatry Behaviour Support Outreach Nurse 2001 to present. Deborah’s entire career at The Royal in Geriatric Psychiatry. PIECES and Gentle Persuasive Approaches In Dementia Care (GPA) trainer. She is also involved in several community / Long Term Care training initiatives. 30 percent of my role is in education to LTC. The remainder of her role is in direct LTC resident assessment, intervention and follow up for mental health issues. Much of my work involves persons with cognitive impairment/ dementia, and support to their caregivers and families. The role is a fascinating nursing blend of psychiatry, gerontology, medicine and teaching along with the privilege of knowing and touching the lives of persons who are in the later years of life and have a wealth of life experiences to share.

Elizabeth Kozyra is a clinical pharmacist. She joined The Royal in 2010 and practices in geriatric psychiatry. She earned her undergraduate pharmacy degree at Memorial University and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Toronto. She has practiced in both community pharmacy and hospital pharmacy and has held academic positions at Memorial University and University of Alberta teaching undergraduate pharmacy students. She has held positions with Health Canada working with First Nations and Inuit Health and with The Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health. She currently sits on the executive committee for CAPP (Canadian Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists).

Laura MacLaurin started her career in nursing in 1987 working on the adolescent inpatient psychiatry unit at the Children’s Hospital of eastern Ontario. Since that time she has continued to work with children and youth with severe eating disorders and mental health needs in an acute care setting. She has held a variety of positions from staff nurse to nurse educator and is currently the manager of the eating disorders program, behavioural neuroscience consultation liaison team and centralized mental health intake.

Patricia McDonough RN, BA, BScN, CPHMN© has been working in Mental Health at The Ottawa Hospital since 1997. Trish has worked in a variety of clinical roles, including In-Patient General Psychiatry, Psychiatric Emergency, and The Mobile Crisis Team. She is currently with The Champlain District Regional First Episode Psychosis Program as a Primary Clinician. Trish enjoys teaching Clinical Mental Health with The University of Ottawa and has focused her interests on education for clients and families using the Early Intervention Recovery Model. Trish has held her certification in Mental Health Nursing with the CNA since 2000. As the population ages, so does her career.

Lisa Murata, RN, BScN, MEd, CPMHN(C), Certified Solution-Focused Therapist
Lisa Murata is the Clinical Nurse Educator at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. Lisa educates nurses and other health care professionals, conducts research, consults and delivers care to persons-in-care individually and in groups.

Monica Tomaselli, RN, Conference Co-Chair, Monica is the day hospital nurse in the schizophrenia program that oversees groups and patient care. She is a smoking cessation champion with the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO). She co-facilitates a smoking cessation/harm reduction group at the Royal. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) at the University of Ottawa in December 2010. She has a Bachelor in Education and another in languages from McGill University in Montreal. She received the Best Health Nurse Excellence Award in 2014.
