How I Broke DSMC

For over 50 years Direct Simulation Monte Carlo has been the dominant molecular algorithm for modeling dilute gas flow. Originally developed for aerospace engineering, its applications now range from nanofluidics to planetary weather. The capabilities of the method have also expanded to include the simulation of realistic chemistry, dense gases, and granular flows. DSMC has a very successful track-record due to its strong foundation in kinetic theory and stochastic processes; its popularity is due to its elegant simplicity. But the method is not fool-proof. As a cautionary tale, the story of how I managed to break DSMC will be presented in this talk.
