Grow Manufacturing Initiative
Grow Manufacturing Initiative began in 2013 as a means to educate and prepare the talented individuals of the North State for a future in manufacturing, thus creating a thriving economy. Launched initially as the North State Manufacturers’ Directory, GMI organized the annual Manufacturing Expo in Chico and promoted training at all levels. In 2014, GMI developed six Train the Trainer programs, which are available to all levels of education and include programs for incumbent workers. Each training program focuses on a specific area within manufacturing that has seen recent and dramatic changes due to the introduction of new technologies. With new funding from a SlingShot grant and PG&E Economic Vitality Grant, GMI has expanded its goals. In 2016 they will focus on three objectives: 1) Building a 21st century workforce, 2) creating a strong manufacturing network, and 3) assisting manufacturers to access resources. Manufacturing is extremely important to Northern California for the economy as well as the related jobs that it provides. However, for manufacturing to prosper, there needs to be commitment to manufacturing talent and development. GMI is an opportunity for partnerships among industry, education and workforce to address the needs of manufacturers and design training for young talent. Follow new developments at growmanufacturing.com, where you can also subscribe to our eblasts, or contact Maya Grunder, project coordinator, at (530) 345-0364 ext. 25.
