Fiber College of Maine 2019

Searsport, Maine
Wednesday, September 04, 2019

  • Throughout the week, the Penobscot Marine Museum and their staff are looking forward to sharing and highlighting the textiles and tools in their collection.  Fiber College volunteers are working with the museum staff right now to create a Fiber Highlights Guide to make your visit more special.
  • Tuesday Evening, join us for a casual potluck and campfire at the campground before heading 5 minutes into Belfast for a special evening of shopping, discounts and desserts with our dear friends Abby Gilchrist of Fiddlehead Artisan Supply and Helen Sahadi of Heavenly Sock Yarns.
  • Wednesday Evening Taco Dinner & Drinks with Linda Cortright, editor of Wild Fibers Magazine.  Linda does what the rest of us dream about...travels the world taking incredible pictures, collecting and disseminating stories and helping a Himalayan village in need; she knows a thing or two about crafting community and will be sharing it with us under the stars.
  • Thursday Evening First Timer's Reception, Wear Your Art Cocktail Party, Live Music and Catch that Color Presentation by tapestry artist Barbara Burns
  • Free Demonstrations all the weekend with live animals, hands on activities and so much more
  • Friday Maker's Market, $10 tables, live music and free entrance for everybody! Come for the day, bring a project and enjoy the atmosphere of an oceanfront makers' celebration
  • Friday Spinning Day, in the morning there's a special class on spinning on antique spinning wheels (sign up in advance here).  Jan Cunningham and Brenda Page, collectors and historians of these gems, have agreed to spend the afternoon showing off their wheels AND if you want to bring an older wheel of your own, they'll help you puzzle out her story or do a simple repair. We'll have a shady spot set up for all who would like to "just sit and spin" all afternoon. Throughout the weekend, Betsy Alspach will be offering a fiber prep station in the a la carte tent in case you'd like to card, comb and or blend your own spinning fibers. ADDED BONUS!  Join the Six Loose Ladies of Vermont in their spinning tent ALL WEEKEND LONG! They're planning door prizes and games...sit and spin for hours...maybe with the fiber you prepare with our own Betsy Alspach.
  • Friday and Saturday, join the Embroider's Guild of America, Maine Chapter to learn stitches and share projects
  • A la Carte Classes throughout the Weekend. These tasting menu classes are an hour long and require no advanced registration or previous knowledge.  Usually $20/class, everyone who has paid a $12 gate fee on Saturday and Sunday will get one free class just to get started!
  • Saturday Evening, step right up for the Student/Teacher Show & Tell, Instructor Trunk Show and Expanded Cocktail Party!
  • Saturday Evening, settle in for a Slide show and panel discussion of how to move your work from a spark of an idea to a soul satisfying outcome moderated by Katharine Cobey and friends.
