Virginia Education Association is pleased to announce the Teachers of Color Summit, February 16-18, 2017. The target audience for this 3-day convocation includes, but is not limited to students, teacher educators, K-12 and postsecondary educators and administrators, retired educators, human resources personnel, community organizations and policymakers. Participants will engage in a variety of discussions on topics related to recruitment and retention of a diverse teacher workforce. Summit activities will include: panel discussions, a keynote speaker, “History and Heritage” luncheon, historical and educational exhibits, vendors and workshop breakout sessions. The summit is sponsored, in part, by the Virginia Department of Education and is a part of a yearlong commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the merger of the Virginia Teachers Association and the Virginia Education Association. There will be a gala reception at the newly renovated Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. Invited guests include Ms. Jahana Hayes, 2016 National Teacher of the Year; The Honorable Terrence R. McAuliffe, Governor, Commonwealth of Virginia; The Honorable Deitra Y. Trent, Secretary of Education, Commonwealth of Virginia; Dr. Toney L. McNair, Jr., 2017 Virginia Teacher of the Year and others.
