Your client’s body is stuck in its usual spots. No surprise. But is your work stuck in a rut, too? Do you need to add a new dimension to your sessions? Then come explore the body in a new way – from new angles.
In this two-part workshop we will look first at the upper body, and then the lower body, and in the process we will learn new ways to get out of the rut that we as therapists can all too easily get stuck in. Our focus here will be to tackle those familiar (but sometimes forgotten) muscles, and those all-too-familiar client complaints, but from unusual angles, and using unusual techniques. We will sit along the sides of the table. We will kneel. We will rock the body. We will work from the opposite side of the table. We will both sink slowly into the client, and we will pull and lean the client up and away from the table.
The aim of these interventions is two-fold. First, by working outside of our usual habits – both by utilizing new angles and unusual techniques – my aim is challenge participants’ body mechanics. As we try new things we realize which of our habits have become ossified – we realize the ways that we are stuck in a rut. Throughout the workshop we explore our own body mechanics, and experiment with ways of working that are more efficient. Second, my aim is to expand the technique toolbox of each participant, giving them the ability to tackle the client complaints they encounter every day in new and satisfying ways.
Materials needed; A massage table, linens and lubricant.
