Berkeley Law La Raza Students Association is delighted to invite you to the 17th Annual Honorable Cruz Reynoso Fellowship Gala.
Each year, we award summer scholarships to promising La Raza law students pursuing social justice internships or judicial externships. These fellowships were created to support our dedicated Raza members in their efforts to provide culturally competent legal services to underserved communities and to advance their legal career. Through these scholarships, we aim to increase diversity in the legal field, and legal services to the Latinx community. Our theme this year is, “Tu eres mi otro yo, por eso seguimos pa’lante; you are my other self, and so, we persevere.” Through this theme, we honor the sense of community essential to our resilience.
Born to a family of migrant farm workers, Cruz Reynoso is a trailblazer who has dedicated his career to serving the Latinx community. He was the first Latinx Supreme Court Justice in California with rulings that protected employees, criminal defendants, consumers, and underserved communities. Reynoso was the sole Latinx in his class to graduate from Berkeley Law. He worked at the California Rural Legal Association (CRLA) as their first Latinx lawyer and eventually became the director in 1969. There he applied his commitment to justice and leadership to further the continuance of CRLA’s work. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Reynoso became one of the first Latinx law professors in the nation, devoting his energy to making the legal profession accessible to Latinx students.
In 2000, President Bill Clinton honored Reynoso with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his devotion to public service. He is currently Professor of Law Emeritus at UC Davis School of Law and remains active in serving the public.
We look forward to seeing you and enjoying an evening of celebration together!
