Instructor: Mary Coogan, Nancy Witherill and Chloe Learey
The Touchpoints Model, developed by Dr. T. Berry Brazelton, emphasizes the importance of relationships in supporting the development of children, families and practitioners. This training introduces an approach to our work with families that departs from the traditional medical and helping models by combining knowledge and perspectives of child and family development with a family-centered, relationship based practice. Touchpoints training is based on the following concepts: Using child behavior as the language with parents toward the goal of promoting optimal child outcomes; Valuing each parent’s strengths to promote parental competence, confidence and self-advocacy skills; Strengthening families through specific communication and relationship building techniques and strategies for providers; Establishing and sustaining therapeutic alliances with families.
In this workshop participants will: a) understand the theories and concepts of the Brazelton Touchpoints approach, with emphasis on the developmental and relational elements of parent-child provider relationships, and their practical applications; b) enhance delivery of care to families by using relationship-building strategies and communication tools based on the Brazelton Touchpoints approach; c) observe and participate in encounters that demonstrate the Touchpoints approach of collaborative anticipatory guidance as a reflective practice involving intentional application of Touchpoints Principals and Assumptions. This workshop is developed for educators and community members that are working with families with children aged birth to five.
