Course Overview: This interactive 2-day course is designed to provide participants with the foundation needed to become competent in the skills of knot-tying and suturing, perineal repair, and first assistant role for cesarean section. The program will enhance and refine suturing skills while focusing on efficient and effective instrument handling to minimize tissue trauma and decrease wound closure time. Teaching methods integrate didactic content with a hands-on skills practicum using perineal and cesarean simulation models. Experienced faculty will oversee skills practice and provide feedback.
Topics include methods to develop and maintain competency and confidence in perineal assessment and repair skills, the surgical skill-set, surgical asepsis, operative anatomy and physiology, professional requirements needed to expand scope of practice, and the theory and skill-set necessary to perform effectively and autonomously as the surgical first assistant.
Prerequisite: Prior to attending Day 2 of this workshop, participants are required to read and study the ACNM text, "The Midwife as Surgical First Assistant" (available from www.shopACNM.com) and come prepared with questions.
Optional: A suture tool kit is available for purchase for $25 (includes scalpel, forceps, needle holder, nylon suture, scissors and simulated skin pad). Kits may be purchased in advance or the day of the workshop.
